As the Muslim community in Singapore and around the world prepares for two major celebrations, many are left wondering what’s the difference between Hari Raya Puasa and Hari Raya Haji.
Although they’re both named after Hari Raya, they actually have pretty different significance when it comes to Muslim communities.
So do you know the difference between the two?
Well, if you are confused, fear not because we’ll be explaining to you everything you need to know about the two festivals!

The term “Hari Raya” directly translates to “Great Day” in English, but the words that follow hold distinct meanings.
“Puasa” means “fasting,” while “Haji” means “pilgrim to Mecca.” These names are not just random additions; they hold significant importance in understanding the purpose and practices of each celebration.
Hari Raya Puasa, also known as Hari Raya Aidilfitri, marks the end of the Ramadan fasting month.
It’s a time for Muslims to come together with family and friends, feast, and celebrate the completion of their fasting journey.
On the other hand, Hari Raya Haji is celebrated 70 days after Ramadan and marks the end of the Hajj pilgrimage, a once-in-a-lifetime journey to Mecca that every able-bodied and financially able Muslim is obliged to take.

Both Hari Raya Puasa and Hari Raya Haji begin with a morning of sermon and prayer at the mosque.
Unfortunately, this year’s circuit breaker in Singapore means that Muslims won’t be able to gather at mosques for these prayers.
Following the morning prayers, Hari Raya Puasa is typically celebrated with visits to relatives and friends, feasting, and gift-giving.
In contrast, Hari Raya Haji involves a “Korban” or sacrifice, where live sheep, lambs, and other livestock are slaughtered as prayers are recited. This practice commemorates the Islamic prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail as an act of obedience to God.
The Korban in Hari Raya Haji is a poignant reminder of Ibrahim’s unwavering faith and devotion. It’s sacrifice is performed to demonstrate one’s willingness to obey God’s commands, even if it means giving up something precious.
This act of sacrifice is meant to bring Muslims closer to their faith and serve as a reminder of the importance of obedience and submission.
Another significant difference between Hari Raya Puasa and Hari Raya Haji lies in the duration of their celebrations. Hari Raya Puasa celebrations can last up to 30 days, while Hari Raya Haji celebrations typically last for four days.
This disparity in celebration periods reflects the unique significance and purpose of each occasion.
In Singapore, Hari Raya Puasa is celebrated on a larger scale than Hari Raya Haji. The Geylang Serai bazaar, Hari Raya light-ups, and other festivities are an integral part of the Hari Raya Puasa experience. Also, check out some cool hari raya furniture from isimply!

With the ongoing pandemic, Muslims in Singapore are having to adapt their Hari Raya Puasa celebrations.
While the circuit breaker has put a damper on traditional mosque gatherings and large-scale festivities, many are finding innovative ways to celebrate with loved ones while maintaining social distancing measures.
From virtual gatherings to intimate family celebrations, the spirit of Hari Raya Puasa remains strong despite the challenges posed by the pandemic.
Although Hari Raya Haji may not receive the same level of public attention as Hari Raya Puasa, it holds immense significance in the Muslim faith.
As the pandemic situation improves, Muslims in Singapore can look forward to a bigger and more festive Hari Raya Haji celebration in the years to come.
Hari Raya Puasa and Hari Raya Haji may share some similarities, but they are distinct celebrations with their own unique spirit and purpose.
By understanding and appreciating these differences, Muslims can deepen their connection with their faith and community, and create meaningful memories with loved ones during these special occasions.
