It is only the third month of 2025, but recent sales data has shown that it is not going well for the furniture industry so far.
With online sales for furniture retailers in the US falling by 0.4% in 2024, many are right to be sceptical of buying furniture during this down period.
However, what if I say that you might be missing out on taking advantage during this critical period of time?
Although interest rates, the housing market, and tariffs all affect retailers, some companies are still managing to thrive, and this could be the perfect time to purchase your favourite couch or chair.
The COVID-19 pandemic led to a surge in furniture sales, but now that things are returning to normal, sales are slowing down. Even top retailers like Wayfair and Williams-Sonoma are feeling the pinch.
This is despite efforts to boost sales, with some retailers even preparing for a turnaround. Wayfair, for example, is projected to reach $11.42 billion in online sales in 2025, but its CEO is still cautious about the future.
Wayfair’s struggles are not unique. Other retailers like RH, formerly known as Restoration Hardware, have also seen a decline in sales. RH fell out of the top five in the Housewares & Home Furnishings category, with Wayfair maintaining its top spot.

Tariffs are also having an impact on furniture sales. Leaders from top retailers like Target and Best Buy have spoken out about the effect of tariffs on e-commerce.
Even smaller retailers like Beyond, which is working to bring its Bad Bath & Beyond brand back to physical stores, are feeling the impact. Beyond’s executive chairman, Marcus Lemonis, believes that tariffs will affect the entire market, not just individual retailers.
Meanwhile, Williams-Sonoma is taking a proactive approach to mitigating the effects of tariffs.
The company has mapped out a plan to reduce its reliance on China sourcing and is evaluating the impact of additional tariffs.
Williams-Sonoma’s CFO, Jeff Howie, noted that the company has already started sourcing from within the US, with much of its upholstery manufactured domestically.
Despite the challenges, furniture retailers are pushing ahead. Wayfair’s revenue growth has remained relatively flat since 2022, but the company is still optimistic about the future.
Williams-Sonoma, on the other hand, raised its full-year guidance when it reported its fiscal third-quarter results in November.
The company’s net revenue fell 2.9% from the same period a year earlier, but it is still looking to the future.

With furniture sales slowing down, it could be the perfect time to buy.
Retailers are looking for ways to boost sales, which means consumers may be able to find some great deals.
Additionally, some retailers are investing in new technologies, like AI-powered search and discovery tools, to enhance the shopping experience.
Speaking of technology, some retailers are using AI-powered tools to enhance the shopping experience.
Wayfair, for example, has debuted a new AI-powered search and discovery tool called Muse.
This tool uses machine learning to help customers find products that fit their style and preferences. Other retailers are also investing in AI-powered tools, which could change the way we shop for furniture.
What does the future hold for furniture retail? As interest rates and tariffs continue to affect sales, retailers will need to get creative to stay ahead.
This could mean investing in new technologies, like AI-powered tools, or finding new ways to reach customers.
Whatever the future holds, one thing is certain, the furniture industry is constantly evolving.
